The Social Media Cheat Sheet

How do you weigh the potential of social media? Where do you find some good monitoring and analys tools for social media? And hoe do you measure social media investments and ROI?

There's unfortunately no plug and play solution. You will allways need an acknowleged and experienced consultant with at least an 8 years experience on strategy based on indepth knowledge of online communication. A holistic approach is key in this area.
That's a hard condition.

To do a quick checkup on social media some tools can be of some use however.

Book: confessions of a public speaker

Anyone out there who sometimes (or more often) have the liberty to speak in front of audiences knows it: speaking is an art. Since I'm kind of new in the arena I figured I could use some help.

The past year I've been doing a lot of presenting. I'm constantly trying to improve what I'm doing. I read books, take ideas, and put them into practice. I'm focusing on these areas now:

* The presentation itself - the slides, the storytelling, the content
* The delivery
* Incorporating social media

Scott Berkun has written a very interesting book about how to do an impressive presentation: Scott Berkun's Confessions of a Public Speaker which is packed with a lot of tips…

What are social media to broadcasters? (2) The numbers

mediaconvergence

Social media are hot. A bit too hot one might say, referring to the 1 bilion dollar Twitter is said to be worth. Where does that leave television and radio? Can they profit somehow on the emerging media or are the social media a whole different ball game?

An analysis.

Most online guru's refer to old media as 'dead' and impress the media ceo's with fuzzy buzzwords like content aggregation, syndication, and using emerging integrated technologies. Well great, I gather you will say. But HOW exactely is seldom explained by all the social media guru's.

So what is the exact impact of social media for publishers, broadcasters and radio?
The next weeks I will present a complete survey of all crucial aspects of using social media effectively, and what I think is the best strategy to…

Update Forrester Technograph

Forrester have just released a new version of their famous Social Technographics ladder, which looks at how people use social media.

Forrester Technograph

As you can see it now includes ‘Conversationalists’:

Conversationalists reflects two changes. First, it includes not just Twitter members, but also people who update social network status to converse (since this activity in Facebook is actually more prevalent than tweeting). And second, we include only people who update at least weekly, since anything less than this isn’t much of a conversation.

For now this just includes US data, and is not reflected in their consumer…

The Connected Agency (1)

connected agency

Forrester recently caused a stir with it's report ‘the connected agency’. Peter Kim and Mary Beth Kemp wrote in name of the research company a sharp analysis about shortcomings of ad agencies. These agencies would not be capable to effect the necessary engagement that would bring brands closer to consumers.

Looking back on the Forrester two years later we notice that agencies and media still have quite a challenge in hooking up with the new circumstances. When I wrote about this report back in 2007 I stated that I found the contents rather shallow and easy and I warned my readers not to overrate pull marketing and social media as the 'Holy Grail'.
I was right at that time, back three years ago traditional advertsiing was still very powerful.
I was wrong about saying we should'nt overrated the…
